Pastoral Care in the Senior School

Pastoral Care at Kambala is concerned with promoting the academic, social, emotional, spiritual and physical wellbeing of all students. It is the cornerstone on which we build the strong and positive relationships which typify the Kambala community. It puts into practice, on a daily basis, the sentiments expressed in the school’s Mission Statement and the ‘Kambala Values’ and by doing so, helps the school to attain its objectives. The Pastoral Care team, lead by the Deputy Principal Pastoral Care, shares a belief in the value of each individual student and is committed to working with students to produce love of learning, self respect and a real sense of community.

In Massie House and Junior School, Pastoral Care of the students is integral to the role of the classroom teachers. Each teacher knows her girls very thoroughly and is able to respond to their individual needs with a minimum of fuss. Self-esteem is built through the wide variety of opportunities to experience success in a very supportive atmosphere. In the Senior School, although every class teacher has an important part to play in nurturing positive self esteem, the Year Co-ordinator and the Tutors at each level are most involved with the Pastoral Care of the students in their care. The School Counsellors provide valuable support and advice to the staff involved in Pastoral Care.

The school Welfare and Discipline Policy takes a problem-solving approach to discipline. It is our intention that the policy should encourage self-discipline within a clearly expressed structure. The policy emphasises the responsibilities which students have to themselves, to one another, to their teachers and to their parents. The policy is underpinned by the values important at Kambala such as a safe, nurturing environment, respect for people and property, tolerance and compassion and pride in the school.

Transition from Primary to Secondary school has been an important focus in recent years. A program is now in place which begins with a ‘Test and Quest’ day in Term 4 and is followed up by a thorough induction in the early days of Term 1.

In all that we do at Kambala we aim to develop in our students confidence, competence and a real connection to their school and their community. These strengths allow them to face all challenges in a positive and resilient manner.
