Drama
The Extra-curricular Drama program at Kambala offers many possibilities for students to steep themselves in all things dramatic. There are opportunities for getting involved as an actor or as part of the Kambala Krew. These opportunities range from classes in Trinity Drama or Theatresports, participation in the Shakespeare Festival or treading the boards in the Senior Production or the Year Nine Play.
Trinity Drama classes are actively attended, with over 200 students involved in the Senior School, and six dedicated specialist Drama teachers bringing a variety of skills from the theatre industry.
Each year begins with a showcase night, An Evening of Drama, featuring about 70 girls from Years 7-12, performing a selection from their Trinity Examinations. The syllabus includes a broad range of acting skills, speech presentations, poetry and performing arts such as stilt walking, puppetry, movement and dance.
During Term 1 students have the opportunity to learn the improvisational skills in playing Theatresports from specialist teachers. This training culminates in the Kambala Theatresports Festival, a hilarious play-off between Houses at the end of the term. The winners of our Inter-House competition then get the chance to play against other schools in the Inter-school Theatresports Festival.
In Term 2, the Kambala Shakespeare Festival takes place, in which many Trinity Drama girls take part. Such is the popularity of this event that there are two designated nights for Junior and Senior students. The winners of this Inter-school Competition then represent the school in the Regional Shakespeare Festival and, if successful, compete in the State Festival.
The Senior Production, usually a collaboration with either Scots or Cranbrook, is a wonderful opportunity for girls to act in a large-scale production and experience the all encompassing, demanding and thrilling nature of live theatre. For those girls who are more interested in the production elements of theatre the Kambala Krew offers possibilities for girls to operate sound and lighting, act as a Stage Manager or Assistant Director, or fathom their way through the world of set, costume or make-up production.
In Term 3, Year 9 students join with Scots students to produce a Year 9 Play. A much anticipated event, with many girls getting involved as actors or as part of the back stage production team.
During this term the AHIGS Festival of Speech enables many girls an opportunity to express their talents, and represent the school, in Debating, Public Speaking, Poetry Recital and Drama.
The year ends with the Trinity Examinations in Term 4. The ATCL Teaching Diploma exam is the top exam being offered as well as the Performance Certificate. Other grades may be taken individually, in pairs or in small groups. There are a series of informal soirees where parents and friends can enjoy the creative work of the students as they near their exam. Those who do not wish to take an exam may also perform on the soiree night.
Debating and Public Speaking
Debating and Public Speaking have long been important in the life of the School. Kambala girls debate with great success in the Archdale Shield, the ISDA Competition, Eastern Suburbs Public Speaking Competition, the Plain English Speaking Competition, Rose Bay Rotary Shield, Mock Trial and Performing Arts Challenge competitions. Social debating with other independent schools is popular.
The fact that Kambala is one of the leading schools in debating and public speaking in Sydney is directly related to the emphasis placed on academic excellence and the development of articulate, confident speakers within the School.
