The Senior School encompasses Years 7 to 12 and the enrolment is approximately 550. Students in Year 7 follow a compulsory curriculum largely determined by Board of Studies requirements, but after this they have the opportunity to elect more subjects each year until Years 11 and 12 where the widest possible choice is made available.
The strength and quality of a Kambala education is not limited to the public successes of our talented students. All girls at Kambala are important and all are encouraged to participate and to do their best. While the pursuit of excellence is important, the School encourages students to believe in the principle that ‘you have succeeded if you have achieved your personal best’.
The House system was introduced at Kambala in 1928 and each girl from Year 3 to Year 12 is in one of the four Houses. Gurney, Roseby and Hawthorne are named after former Principals, while Wentworth is named after WC Wentworth, grandson of the statesman and a Founder of the School when it became a Foundation School in 1926. Tutor groups are formed according to Houses.
Each House has two Captains, who together with Prefects and Officers lead the House through the year’s activities. There is also a teacher who acts as House Patron for each house.
Throughout the year Inter-House competitions are held in music, debating, and sport. Students participate in the competition both with a determination to win and a spirit of fun. At the end of the year the Angus Cup is won by the House which has accumulated the highest number of points.
The House system provides opportunities for participation and for leadership. It is particularly helpful in giving new girls a sense of identity and the opportunity to make new friends outside the classroom.
