Chess
Chess classes with Irina Berezina-Feldman are held in the Junior School Library on Tuesday and Friday(Beginners) lunchtimes. After school classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays (3.30 - 4.30) in the Junior School Library. Irina believes that learning chess helps children do better at school because it improves memory and concentration as well as improving discipline and logic skills. The Junior School Chess Championship is held in Term 2 and is open to all Junior School girls. The School has a superb wooden chess board to display the winners' names.
Kambala Junior School also participates in the Junior Chess League of NSW's schools' competition where they play teams from other Eastern Suburbs schools. We also field a team at the Scots Chess Challenge, held at the end of Term 2 each year and attend the JSHAA Chess Competition.
Dance
After school dance classes are conducted by Ms Jo Bolden. Jo introduces the girls to a variety of dance styles - jazz ballet, funk, modern expressive and contemporary dance.
She encourages team work in group routines as well as extends the girls individually. The girls work towards a performance at the end of each term and parents and friends are invited to be part of the audience.Dance Classes are held from 3.30 - 5.30 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays.
After School Art
Mrs Annie Dearnley, who inspired the girls to produce some wonderful artworks when she was the Junior School Art Teacher, offers after school art classes for girls who are interested in Art. These classes are held on Wednesday and Thursday 3.30 - 5.00 pm.
Debating
Year 6 girls participate in a number of debating competitions throughout the year. During Term 2 girls debate in the ISDA Competition. Kambala participates in a series of social debates with a range of schools in the local area in Term 3. We also enter the ESDA competition later in the year. House Debates are popular with both our debaters and audiences at lunchtimes in Term 3, with winning points adding to the House total for the year. As many girls as possible are encourged to participate in this range of debating activities.
Mandarin
Mandarin tuition is offered for girls in years 3 – 7 and 8 – 11. Lessons are at beginner and intermediate level. Initially, they concentrate on speaking Mandarin and recognition of characters. As the lessons continue there is more emphasis on reading and writing. The classes are on Wednesday from 3.45 – 4.45pm.
