Year 10 ISDA Team Wins Grand Final

Our Year 10 ISDA team was victorious in the Grand Final held at the end of Term 2, against a strong team from St Aloysius’ College. Congratulations girls!
We had eight ISDA teams competing this year, including two Junior School teams. They competed in seven rounds of debating with the Primary B and Senior B teams making it through to Semi Final 2. The Year 7 and Year 10 teams competed in Semi Final 3 and both were successful in qualifying for the Grand Finals, a remarkable achievement. The Year 7 team delivered a strong and confident performance for the Grand Final debate and was the runner up for their division. Our Year 10 debators were declared grand final victors and a very excited audience applauded their success.

Massie Open House

On 20 June, we welcomed parents and visitors to Massie House for our first Open House. It was wonderful to see so many parents participating in the activities and enjoying presentations given by girls. Our aim was to give parents the opportunity to see what happens in classrooms and to share the engagement the children experience daily. Organising groups of girls into mixed age groups gave people an opportunity to see the range of learning that occurs across the years in Massie House. It also offered each girl an opportunity to give a presentation about the concepts she had studied. Most of all, parents were able to participate in the joy of learning through experience and collaboration.

Shakespeare Festival

Last week we had a very successful Shakespeare Festival with 27 girls from Years 8-11 competing in both Duologues and Scenes. The standard was impressive and several parents considered it to be one of the best yet! The winning girls will all go on to perform at SCEGGS in July for the Regional Finals.

My Fair Lady

Another event in the dramatic life of the Kambala Community was a wonderful production of My Fair Lady produced by Scots College, with many of our girls in both the chorus and main roles. Natasha was an outstanding Eliza whose beautiful voice and stage presence were remarkable.

Pink Day at Massie House

On Thursday 22 May, Massie House held a “Pink Day” to raise money for the research and prevention of breast cancer. All money raised will go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Massie House was a sea of pink and the staff also entered into the spirit of the day. We aim to raise awareness of the needs of others and from time to time hold special days particularly when the charity is one that can raise awareness in young children.

Junior School Beach Party

Junior School reinvented the beach party in a memorable parents' evening at Bondi Beach Pavilion last Friday. If dancing under the mirror ball was too much, there was fabulous food, great company and iconic Bondi Beach just out the windows. It was strictly 'fun raising' and Junior School exceeded the target. The Junior School Parent Co-ordinators are to be congratulated on the successful organisation of the evening.

Senior School Athletics Carnival

All girls from Years 7-12 participated in the Senior Athletics Carnival on Friday 12th May, at ES Marks Athletics Field. Girls ran, threw, jumped and hurdled to gain points for their house. There were some superb moments of athletic achievement and a wonderful atmosphere of excitement and house spirit. Roseby was the winning house, with Wentworth a very close second.

Fernbank Dinner

The biennial Fernbank Dinner was held in our Senior Boarding House, Fernbank, last Friday. This evening allowed our Year 11 and 12 boarders, their parents and Fernbank staff to spend an elegantly relaxed dinner together in the girls’ “other” home. This year we were delighted to have Ms Carolyn Hewson as our guest speaker. Ms Hewson is a most inspiring example of what women can achieve with a positive attitude and a commitment to make a difference.

Year 8 Kangaroo Valley Outdoor Education Expedition

Year 8 girls spent a week journeying through the beautiful and historic Kangaroo Valley; together they explored the area by bushwalking, canoeing and abseiling. By living in small communities for the week they had the opportunity to face challenges, witness the beauty together and bond as sisters while learning to exist simply in the outdoors.

Theatresports Competition

Term one came to a resounding finish with the Inschool Theatresports competition on the last day of term. It was an excellent morning of improvisation, risk taking, hilarity and fun. Both Junior and Senior girls played magnificently and created some hilarious scenes. Theatresports is a very challenging form of theatre demanding nerves of steel and confidence. Girls showed great courage and improvisation skills as they bounded into scenes, many of them with little previous experience. Wentworth House Senior Team won with their inspiring acting and will go on to the Interschool Finals in May. In the Junior section Roseby House triumphed.

Grandparents Day

Massie House and ELC celebrated Grandparents Day on Friday 28 March. We were delighted to see so many special friends, godparents and grandparents, some of whom had travelled from interstate and a few had even come from overseas. We began with morning tea in the Tivoli drawing room. Grandparents then toured Massie House and visited classrooms. We had a special assembly in the Hall and our visitors were entertained with songs and poems. The day was a wonderful celebration of the significant contribution that older generations make to the lives of the very young.

Clean Up Australia Day

Kambala girls participated in Clean Up Australia day on Friday, March 7. With protective gloves, garbage bags and hats the girls worked in their Tutorial Groups and cleaned Tivoli Avenue, the Kambala Oval, Rawson Road, New South Head Road and Hermitage Foreshore Reserve. The girls displayed an eagerness to keep our environment clean. A special thanks to all who were involved in the preparation for Clean Up Australia Day, especially Mrs Christodoulou and all the Environment Committee girls.

International Women's Day Breakfast

The International Women's Day Breakfast was held in the Alexander Hall on Friday 7 March. Students of Years 11 and 12 were invited to bring a significant 'other' or woman to a wonderful breakfast with special guest speaker, Jeannie Little. Ms Little's bubbly personality was personified by her bright orange attire and she spoke of where she started in her career as a clothing designer, to TV personality, to stage. Her thought of the day was, 'Just try it, even though you might not be good at it, give it a go!'

House Music Festival

The Kambala Musical Festival can only be described as one of the most spectacular annual events thanks to the hard work and dedication of all the girls and Staff. As per usual, the camaraderie between the houses was to be commended, still managing to cheer for their opposition, whilst performing their absolute best. Congratulations to all the girls who participated - each student who contributed through arranging, conducting or leading the Houses in their performances should feel proud of their efforts and the performances of their respective choirs and instrumental groups.

KPA Welcome Cocktail Party
The Welcome Cocktail Party was a most enjoyable evening. Amongst the guests were members of the School Council, KPA and Old Girls' Union, staff and old and new parents. The Assembly Hall played host to the evening rather than the usual venue, the Tivoli Forecourt, because of the very dark skies looming outside.
The Principal, Margaret White, gave a Welcome to the New Year speech and ended with the belief that it will be a great 2008! Her speech was followed by a representative of the KPA who encouraged all parents to take part in the many activities that the School has to offer throughout the year.
The President of the Old Girls' Union took the opportunity to unveil the exquisite 120 Year Commemorative Quilt which was a mammoth task to co-ordinate and thanked all those who worked tirelessly to put it all together. The quilt will soon be framed and mounted and on display at School.
